Gardening is on my mind, completely. Can you tell? Last Saturday, when Michael and the kids went to OMSI with Alicia and Andy, I had the entire, sunny afternoon to myself and I decided to plant these babies:
Veggies are hard for me. Mostly because I don't have a lot of experience growing them and also because edibles are so much fussier than ornamental plants. And then there's the bugs. Ugh. So many of them out there working against me.
I tried growing vegetables in this patch of dirt last year and they didn't do so well. Since this space is narrow and close to the foundation, the soil is horrible (plus there's the possible issue of lead paint being scraped into the soil by previous owners). It's still a perfect spot for a kitchen garden so I decided to try things in pots this time. I'm also playing it safe and planting things I've successfully grown here before, like lettuces, parsley, arugula, cilantro, and garlic.
I dressed the tops with "used" straw from the bunny hutch. Handy to have an ongoing supply of that sometimes. I made these quick and dirty plant tags by wrapping strips of an aluminum sheet I had on my craft shelf around some garden stakes that were left over from last year. This is some frugal gardening right here.
When it warms up officially, I want to build another veggie plot in the backyard for carrots, tomatoes, potatoes, onions, broccoli, peppers, zucchini, and peas. I'd love to hear what you're growing this year!
